Double The Life Of Your Hair Extensions And Lace Wigs
I’ve been in the hair loss industry for over 22 years, and I’ve been around “non-growing hair” for even longer. Let’s face it- we love the extra volume and look of our new hair when we first get it, but after a while- it gets dried out, frizzy and damaged.
Many people mistakenly think that the problem is the quality of the hair. That’s sometimes true. But there is one thing that’s far more common that you might not know about.
Most non growing hair is treated with silicone before you receive it. That goes for extensions, bundles and lace wigs.. Why? It gives it a smooth, silky feel. The problem is this- that silicone wears off after 10 washings. Have you noticed that after you wash and style it for a few weeks- it doesn’t quite feel the same way it did when you got it? That’s why.
Before you get all mad at your stylist- here’s what you can do to get more life out of your hair.
Use Argan Oil
Argan Oil is a perfect way to inject new life into your hair. It can prevent frizz and static, and can help repair split ends. Most people experience immediate benefits by using Argan oil as a leave-in conditioner, it works incredibly well for promoting shine and gloss, taming frizz and leaving the hair softer and more manageable.
Start with just a drop of the oil, warming it in your palms before spreading it throughout your hair with your fingers. Pay close attention to the ends of the hair. Afterward, add a tiny bit to your fingers and massage it into your scalp.
Treat Damaged Hair
If your hair is dry and brittle, once a week, treat it with the ArganOil by warming 6 to 8 drops in your hands before massaging it into your scalp. Work it through your hair, applying to the ends and then pull all of your hair up into a shower cap. The shower cap helps retain your natural body heat which allows the oil to penetrate better, as well as keeping the oil away from your pillowcase. In the morning, wash your hair as you normally would and rinse well, until all oil residue is gone. Apply this treatment once a week to maintain healthier hair.
Wigs Are Delicate!
Here’s a rule of thumb. The more natural a lace wig or hair replacement is, the more delicate it is. Many are made with ultra fine lace, or “skin systems” (which is essentially the same thickness as a condom). You have to wash and style things delicately, or it WILL LOSE HAIR. If it is a hand tied unit, don’t use too much conditioner or organ oil around the base, focus more on the ends of the hair, and brush with a boar bristle brush or comb to condition it completely.
Protect Your Hair from Heat Styling
Before using any styling tools, apply 2 to 3 drops of Argan oil using your palms. Then use a boar bristle brush or comb to distribute it evenly throughout your hair from roots to tips which coats it with the oil, keeping it protected from heat damage.Argan oil enriches the hair, nourishing it with nutrients and repairing damage.
Be careful with curling irons & flat irons with lace wigs! Many of them go over 400 degrees, and can melt the base materials .
If you take care of your hair, and heed this advice- you could easily double the life of your hair, and it will look so much healthier each day.
